Ulster Folk Dance - Ideal for Weddings or Informal Functions

Over the years many parts of our distinct cultural history have been watered down, contaminated by other influences, and in some cases lost to the mists of time. At one time in Antrim and Down particularly, the areas normally associated with Ulster Scots, every Townland had local musicians and regular soirees and dances. At these dances a particular type of dancing was popular, square or round dancing.

Ulster Folk Dance, as introduced and "called" by Derek Montgomery is based on traditional Ulster Country Dance, which was very popular for over 200 years. This has links with Irish Set Dancing, Scottish Ceilidh, American Square Dance and New England Contra Dance. "The Lancers" and "Quadrilles" were common throughout Ulster. They may require a bit of practice, but simpler dances can be learned instantly and they are a tremendous amount of fun. This is ideal for weddings or informal functions
